Any experienced webmaster knows the importance of a reliable FTP program. Many of you may make use of our simple upload tool available within your control panel however for those of you with more complex websites, you cannot afford to upload files one at a time so an FTP client is required to speed up the process.
The great news is that there are many free FTP clients on the internet and we have review the top 3 below!
FileZilla is no doubt the most well known free FTP client out there, like many things free it is also opensource something which has certainly contributed to its success. FileZilla may not look as good as the others listed below but when it comes to speed and efficiency FileZilla wins hands down.
FireFTP is not a standalone client, it’s actually a FireFox add-on. It’s both simple and lightweight whilste including many of the same features that you will find with FileZilla. FireFTP supports searching, remote editing, drag and drop, synchronization and more. FireFTP is a must for any FireFox fan!
GoFTP makes a lot of promises with regards to speed, supposedly working 314% faster than its competitors. GoFTP performs “on the fly compression” as well as instant connections and directories through proprietary technology. It also supports the usual features which we talked about with the previous 2 FTP programs. This is another good FTP program and once again it is FREE.

There are literally thousands of Wordpress plug-ins on the internet available to download, from search engine optimization plug-ins to security enhancement, each plug-in has their own uses but out of the thousands a small handful stands out, these are our essential plug-ins for Wordpress.
Google Sitemaps Generator
The sitemaps generator for Wordpress generates a sitemap for your WP installation allowing all major search engines to discover each and every post within your blog. What’s great about this tool is that it’s 100% automated and therefore it does all the work for you. If search engines are important to the success of your website, the Google Sitemaps Generator plug-in is essential for your blog.
SEO Title Tag 2.3.3
With the SEO (Search engine optimization) title tag plug-in you can change the title tags assigned to each of your blog posts. Without the plug-in, Wordpress will set the title tags for you based on your blog post title but the SEO Title Tag plug-in puts you in control of every single page within your WP installation.
CAPTCHA for WP
Comment spam is becoming more and more of a problem for blog owners these days, there are many tools out there that will help reduce spam. None of these tools compare to this Wordpress comment captcha plug-in.
Google Analytics
If you do not monitor your site’s traffic performance then you really should do, and what better way to do that than with Google Analytics? The Google Analytics plug-in for Wordpress allows you to install Google’s Java Script code into every page and post within your blog so you can monitor every aspect of the visitors reaching and browsing your website.
There are many variations of these plug-ins, the plug-ins above are highly recommended by ourselves and the Wordpress community. Remember, you can find more plug-ins by heading over to the WP plug-in page at Wordpress.com.

OK so we’re not quite in December yet and it may be a few weeks still before any of you think about Christmas presents this year. If you are anything like me you will wait to the very last minute and then seriously regret it when you are still 5 presents short on Christmas Eve!
For businesses though it is a different story and sending gifts out to clients overseas has to done early to ensure on time delivery. Waiting until Christmas Eve won’t cut it this time! So already we have started looking for the most quirky gifts we can find, after all we want our gift to stand out over any other.
We started thinking green and found lots of cool gifts made from 100% recycled material such as mouse mats, coasters and diaries. And then we came across a super cool gift, a LIVING Christmas Tree card.

The real Christmas tree card is imported from Norway and contains a living Christmas tree. The materials surrounding the tree are made from 100% recycled material, the ink itself is made from inks withdrawn from vegetables!
You have been warned, giant oversized Christmas cards could be on in the post very shortly…

The ecobutton is a USB device that saves energy when activated by putting your computer into “eco mode”. The device delivers as little energy as possible whilst you’re away from you PC, on a coffee break, in a meeting or out for Friday lunch. What is even more impressive is that the ecobutton will calculate how much CO2 you have saved and how much that would have cost you and your electricity bill without the ecobutton attached.

The ecobutton is a product manufactured in the UK and retails for around £12.99 (around $21 US Dollars). Some retailers will distribute worldwide but it will come at a cost since it is also shipped from the UK.
If you know of any quirky green gifts or gadgets please let us know!

A Google search never takes more than a second, actually a search for “web hosting” this morning took just 0.28 seconds giving me 183,000,000 results to choose from. Little thought goes into the inner-workings of Google and how the search engine giant displays these results. Even less thought goes into the environmental impact of your search and the amount of CO2 that is produced as a direct result of it.
Earlier this year a report on online energy revealed that performing 2 Google searches can produce as much carbon dioxide as is emitted from a boiling kettle. Simpler put, the average search produces around 7g of CO2! *Each year Google alone servers around 76 billion searches out of the 113 billion searches performed at all search engines combined.
Google were quick to respond claiming that the average search will produce as little as 0.2 grams.
Fortunately for you, reading this article and browsing your own website has no environmental impact whatsoever since our data center only makes use of 100% green web hosting – we won’t settle for any less.
*Based on a comScore qSearch report of July 2009 vs. July 2008.
